Vitebsk is located in the north-east of Belarus, in the eastern part of the Vitebsk region. It is located near the river Western Dvina. According to the chronicles, Vitebsk was founded around 1100 AD. Since then, the city has undergone many changes. In the middle of the 16th century, the city became Vitebsk province. It served many soldiers and recruits.
Now Vitebsk is not only an administrative, but also a cultural center of Belarus.The city has a health system, there are research institutes, five higher educational institutions (Vitebsk State University named after PM Masherov, Vitebsk State Technological University, etc.), a theological seminary.
